Deaf Culture...

Fortunly, I am so glad because I have had the opportunity of been surrounded by many different people, some of them fascinated me from the very begining of my life ,and in this case the curiosity did not kill the cat , but instead, lead me to a wonderland of mute melodies.

Her name was Maria Laura, she was my neighbord many years ago, and she was younger than me. Actually, I always used to play with younger kids because I didn´t want to grow up, I wanted the life to stand still in that moment. Now, I am a preschool teacher, Are you wondering why? Ok, let`s go back to Maria Laura my childhood friend, she had a very weird way of communicate, she was always touching me and moving her hands so fast while she was emphasizing her speech using her facial expressions. Everything, could give me a sign or a clue to understand her better.

Her face told me about her mood, her hands told me about where, what, when... and suddenly I realized that somehow we were communicating successfully.
This was one of my favorite life encounters, I can remember how aware of my movements and gestures I was, in order to avoid any kind of misunderstanding that could offended her.

As it is to be expected, I quickly started to learn her signs and codes without pursue it but I could easily understood must of her ideas, feelings, and picked a lot of signed "words" and "vocabulary" through daily activities and interaction. We shared a lot of funny typical childhood experiences as other kids could share.

When I visited her in her house for the first time, it was shocking for me. I was so scared of her father, probably because he was a dentist but more likely because he was oftenly yelling or producing throaty sounds, that confused me a lot. I felt very uncomfortable about him, but then I just started to get familiar with the unexpected sounds. And one day I just stopped to noticed them at all.

This family was quite interesting for me, their way of life, the way they behaved and interacted to each other was "unique", they laughed of things I couldn`t, there were a set of events that I cannot explain because of their intangible nature and since those events do not fit with any other example in our culture (hearing-speaking people). So, I appreciate that there were much much more beyond that just shaking hands in the air. They have their own world of ideas, and of course they don`t think in English, Spanish or even in any other spoken language, they think in the way they do, and that`s it!... they express themselves from their sensorial experiences, but they also have a lot of deepness as all human beings.

María Laura and I, we started growing and growing up whether we liked it or not. She met a group of deaf friends and she forgot me little by little; she looked very happy and pretty identified with her "culture", and I was so happy for her.
